DAY TRIPS
Experience our adventurous Amatopo day trips now. Get into one of the comfortable aluminum boats with our professional guide and a local native boatman who knows the river like the back of his hand. The Corantijn River has many small and large islands with a network of connecting waterways. You sail straight through untouched pure rainforest. Experience the feeling when you realize your small group is the only human presence in hundreds of miles around you.
Along the way we often spot birds such as macaws in all colors, osprey, guans and Black Curassow, kingfishers, toucans and much more.
We take you to spectacular waterfalls and rapids where (depending on the water level) you can relax in and near the sparkling, fast-flowing water. Climb over impressive rock formations and discover the ancient petroglyphs of the original Trio Indians who live in this area to this day.
We have set up beautiful camps especially for you, where we cook for you in the shade and where you can freely hang a hammock. In the refreshing sula (rapids) you let yourself be embraced by the pure river water. Take a walk around the island with our guide who will be happy to share all his knowledge about the flora and fauna. Be surprised by height differences and spectacular views where the silver water cascades down. We guarantee you the experience of a lifetime. Our 5-day package includes two day trips and the 7-day package includes no fewer than three full day trips.

FOREST WALK

Discover and experience the jungle up close on the Lucie Trail. Take a challenging and adventurous forest walk with our experienced guides, taking around 2,5 to 3 hours. In the meantime, you will receive explanations and stories about the different trees, plants, medicinal herbs and flowers that you encounter on the hike and also wildlife because you hear and see a lot. Spot the mesmerizing blue Morpho Rhetenor butterflies and listen to birds sing their spectacular melodies... Something new awaits you around every bend of the narrow forest path. We visit places that beg to be photographed or to rest for a while. The forest has several creeks at different times of the year that we cross via a tree trunk bridge. We pass zwampen, the Surinamese jungle swamps that are the domain of the anaconda (aboma) and the spectacled caiman.
At the end of our hike, which takes you over hills and through valleys, you will arrive at the Lucie River, which is labeled by biologists and experts as one of the most unique and pristine rivers in Suriname. Rich in wildlife such as the illusive jaguar, tapir, groups of capybaras and pingos (small wild pigs) and plenty of birdlife such as macaws and toucans.
There in the shade on the Lucie River we have a few pleasant surprises in store for you. Are you curious? Book your stay at Amatopo Rainforest Retreat now. Discover, experience and feel!
FISHING TRIPS
There is plenty to do in the immediate vicinity of the resort if you like fishing! Catch black piranhas of 35 centimeters "on your doorstep", several species of catfish including the redtail. Hunt the legendary tukunari, the peacock bass that is a favorite of anglers all over the world. Whitefish specialists can also indulge themselves with catches of species like kwana, warakoe and the elusive moroko (brycon falcatus) (30-35 cm). Book a fishing trip with us (half or full day) and take an aluminum boat with a guide and boatsman to the most beautiful "spots" where you can also find the anjoemara. The Animal Planet show River Monsters with Jeremy Wade has an entire episode dedicated to the wolffish, the anjoemara, actually shot here on the Corantijn river. Then you already know that we are talking about a fabulous sport fish whose aggressiveness is legendary.
If you have not brought your own fishing equipment, you can rent it from us. We offer complete casting rods with reel, braided line, steel leaders and various types of lures. Discuss the options in advance or during your stay. Considering the programs, the following days offer space to book your fishing trip:
5 days program
On day 3 half a day of fishing
7 day program
On day 5, half or a full day of fishing
Bookings are made based on sufficient participation (4 people per half day) and availability.
If you want to fish every day during your stay, we can offer you a tailor-made package (for multiple participants). Please contact us and we will discuss the possibilities.
Amatopo has a catch and release policy in which we offer some limited space to take away caught fish. However, fish is not allowed to be taken into town, so you can also donate the fish to the people of the village or hand it over to the resort's kitchen crew and we will prepare it fresh for you!
